Cats Can Eat Mashed Potatoes but With Certain Caveats

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potato meals are considered safe for cats to eat as an occasional treat. You must, however, be careful with certain things before you let your cat eat the mashed potato.

First, make sure the mashed potato doesn’t contain any ingredients that are toxic to cats. This mainly applies to people who buy ready-made mashed potato meals from the supermarket. These products may contain ingredients like garlic and onions, which are toxic to cats. They may also be seasoned heavily with salt, which isn’t good for a cat’s stomach.

Second, only let your cat eat a tiny amount of plain mashed potatoes. Most mash potato recipes will require heavy usage of dairy products like whole milk and butter. Many cats are lactose intolerant so consuming too much dairy-based products may lead to the development of conditions like gastroenteritis. In most cases, a few licks of the mashed potato is unlikely to cause your cat much harm.

Last but not least, make sure your cat doesn’t get a lick of the gravy, which usually complements the mashed potatoes. Gravy tends to have a high fat content and may also contain seasonings that are harmful to cats.
