3 Reasons Why Dogs Howl When You Leave
Some dogs have a tendency to start howling whenever someone leaves the house. There could be a number of reasons for this behavior, some of which can be concerning and should be addressed by the dog owner as soon as possible.
Dog Has Separation Anxiety
Your dog may howl when you leave because he has developed separation anxiety. This is even more prevalent during the covid-19 era when dog owners may have spent more time at home with their pets during lockdown. As a result, some dogs may not be accustomed to being alone (once dog owners return to the regular work schedule) and that leads to the howling behavior.
Responding to a Sound
Some dogs may also howl as a response to a certain trigger. For example, whenever you open the door to leave the house, the dog might hear or smell certain things that act as a trigger of howling. This could be something as simple as a passing car or the smell of other people.
Such reasons may also explain howling at random times of the day or night such as when the dog howls at 3 AM for no apparent reason.
Sometimes, dogs may howl when you leave because they are sick. Although, it’s likely that they will howl on other occasions as well if that is the case. We would suggest taking your dog to the vet if you see any other concerning behaviors or symptoms in addition to the excessive howling.
