Dogs Don’t Know When They Are Being Put to Sleep
It’s unlikely that your dog knew he was being put to sleep when it was time to say goodbye. Some dog owners may believe they do as a result of the dog’s behavior but it’s unlikely.
Some dogs, for example, might look extremely anxious or scared before and during their euthanasia appointment but this could be due to the fact that they are in an unfamiliar environment (the vet’s treatment room) or the fact they are exposed while they are sick.
Other dogs may appear more calm before they are being put to sleep and we might interpret that as the dog understanding it’s time to cross the rainbow bridge.
This is a difficult and heartbreaking time for all dog owners. We understand that not all dog owners are the same and some may find it too difficult to be present when their dogs draw their last breath.
That said, if you can, please try to be there with your dog when they are being put to sleep. The dog will be much more comfortable knowing you are in his presence and that you are there in his last memories.
