Dog Stinks Even After a Bath – Top 3 Reasons Why

Here are a few common reasons why a dog may stink even after a proper bath.

1. Lingering wet dog smell

Some dogs may continue to stink until their fur is fully dried. The stink you smell after you give the dog a bath could be a temporary wet smell caused by yeast and bacteria in the dog’s fur. The bacteria emit a volatile compound as the water evaporates. Certain dog breeds, such as pugs and basset hounds, are known to be more smelly than others because they either have more natural oil in the skin or because they have more loose skin.

It may take time but getting a pet dryer is one way to make sure your dog’s coat is getting properly dried and preventing your dog from smelling bad not long after a bath.

2. Wrong choice of dog shampoo

The shampoo you are currently using might not be the right fit for your dog’s coat. Double-coated dogs, for example, like border collies and golden retrievers need a shampoo that does a better job of penetrating their undercoat. Medicated pet shampoos such as those with antibacterial and antifungal properties may also help if the dog is recovery from certain skin infections.

3. Underlying health conditions

No amount of bathing may remove a dog’s stink if they are affected by certain health conditions. Seasonal allergies for example may continue to make a dog stink even after a bath. The allergic reaction may result in an excessive secretion of oil which, in turn, leads to the production of a musty smell.

The bad smell might also come from certain parts of the dog’s body, such as the anal glands. For example, some dogs may stink after a bath because of the fish-like smell that comes from impacted anal glands. You should have the dogs checked for any health problems if they continue to stink after every bath.
