Can Dogs Eat Cream Cheese? When it is or isn’t an Emergency

Most dogs will be okay if you feed them plain cream cheese in tiny, infrequent amounts but we would try to avoid this if possible. Cream cheese isn’t toxic to dogs but it does contain a decent amount of fat and calories. Dogs that are fed fatty products on a consistent basis are likely to suffer from health problems such as weight-related issues.

The above is only referencing plain cream cheese. Certain flavored versions are likely to contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs. For example, scallions are a popular addition to cream cheese and they are toxic to pets.

Cream cheese also contains lactose, albeit a very small amount. Dogs that high sensitivity to lactose may suffer from temporary digestive problems if they are allowed to eat cream cheese.
