Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin Bread? When it is or isn’t an Emergency

Generally speaking, bread is considered safe for dogs to eat in moderation. Not all breads, however, are created equal and certain types, such as the pumpkin bread, are likely to pose more of a threat to a dog’s health than others.

The biggest concern we have is the ingredients that pumpkin breads usually contain. Lots of pumpkin bread recipes, for example, employ ingredients like nutmeg, which is considered toxic to dogs. Pumpkin bread may also use a lot of ingredients that aren’t toxic but could still prove to be problematic if a dog was to ingest a large amount.

Butter is one example. Pumpkin breads utilize a large amount of butter and this can cause problems with the dog’s stomach due to the fat content. Some pumpkin breads may also contain nuts, some of which are either toxic to dogs or have a relatively high fat content.

Despite the core ingredient, the pumpkin, being safe for dogs to eat, there are too many risks introduced from the other ingredients which doesn’t make it worthwhile for your dog to take a bite of pumpkin bread.
