Can Dogs Eat Tomato Sauce Safely?

Tomato Sauce

In general, it’s safe for dogs to eat ripe tomatoes in small amounts but we wouldn’t recommend feeding them tomato sauce. The reason for this has to do with the many ingredients that goes into tomato sauce. A lot of the tomato sauce you come across in stores are likely to be packed with salt, sugar, and other additives that may not be healthy for dogs. Some tomato sauces may also contain garlic and onions, which are toxic for our furry friends.

If you do want to serve tomato to your dog then the best way is by serving the dogs small pieces of ripe tomatoes. It’s important for the stem, leaves, and vines to be extracted before the tomatoes are served as an occasional treat. If this is the first time you will be serving tomatoes to your dog then start off with a small piece. This will allow you to check for any allergic reactions.
