Can Dogs Eat Wholemeal or Whole Wheat Bread? When it is or isn’t an Emergency

Plain whole wheat or wholemeal bread isn’t considered toxic to dogs but there isn’t really a good reason for your dog to eat them to begin with. If it was accidental then you most likely won’t have to worry unless your dog is allergic to wheat or if the whole wheat bread contains other ingredients that are considered toxic to pets.

Whole wheat bread is considered one of the healthier bread varieties because it has a higher amount of fiber and nutrients but the benefits aren’t likely to be large enough to help your dog. One of the biggest problems when it comes to whole wheat or wholemeal bread is the calories.

On average, a dog may only require 25 to 30 calories per pound to maintain their body weight. Bread, especially whole wheat bread, can be a calorie filler so you could be making your dog vulnerable to weight issues if they are being allowed to eat whole wheat bread on top of their regular dog food.

You don’t want the bread to account for a large amount of the dog’s daily calorie intake because of the lack of nutrients. A small piece of whole wheat bread is unlikely to hurt the dog but please refrain from giving them bread when possible.
