Can Shih Tzus Eat Apples? When it is or isn’t an Emergency

Apple can be eaten by dogs like Shih Tzus as long as you make the proper preparations. The most important step is to discard the apple seeds. The easiest way would be to simply remove the apple core. Apple seeds must be removed because they contain amygdalin, a substance that can release cyanide into the Shih Tzu’s body once it is chewed and digested.

Shih tzus that eat apple seeds are at risk of getting sick. It can potentially become fatal if the Shih tzu eats too many apple seeds in one go. Once you have removed the seeds, we would suggest cutting the remaining apple flesh into smaller pieces so that it’s easier for the Shih tzu to chew.

Apples can be a good source of fiber and vitamins so it could benefit the shih tzu if you give him a healthy apple treat from time to time. Want to know what else a Shih Tzu can and cannot eat? Check out our human food for dogs database for more information!
