Dog Throwing Up Foamy and Frothy Yellow Vomit – Top 3 Reasons Why
The appearance and color of vomit gives strong clues to health conditions or diseases a dog might be affected by. The following reasons may explain dogs that throw up yellow vomit with a foamy and frothy appearance.
1. Your dog isn’t eating enough
When a dog throws up foamy content that has a yellow color, it’s typically bile which they are vomiting out. Bile is a digestive fluid produced in the liver. Its main purpose is to help break down food in the small intestines. Sometimes, excess bile can leak into the stomach and eventually come out as vomit. This can happen if the dog has had an empty stomach for a prolonged period of time. Some dog owners, as a result, may notice their dogs throwing up yellow foam more often in the morning.
2. Consequences of eating grass
Some dogs may throw up yellow foam after eating grass or other plant materials. This happens because the dog’s stomach isn’t able to digest the grass. Some of the grass the dog consume will make its way back up (mixed in with the yellow bile). There is a theory that dogs purposely eat grass to relieve the discomfort felt from an upset stomach but this has never been proven to be true.
3. Development of food allergies
The vomiting of foamy and frothy yellow vomit might be due to an allergic reaction. Have you made any changes to your dog’s diet recently? Or have you introduced any new treats? Food allergies can cause stomach upsets, which in turn, increases the chances of a dog throwing up more frequently while they are sick.
What to do if your dog vomits yellow foam
Take your dog to the vet for a proper diagnosis. The cause of the yellow foamy vomit may end up being something fairly harmless. Some dog owners, for example, were able to stop their dog from throwing up yellow bile by feeding them a handful of dog kibbles before going to bed. This helped their dogs by not having their stomachs in an empty state for an extended period of time.
This, however, isn’t something you should assume as yellow foamy vomit can also be caused by something more serious. In the meantime, it may be appropriate to temporarily change your dog’s diet to something more bland. The dog should also have access to clean drinking water at all times.
